Technical aspects of our website designs

We thought you might like some technical information about our websites

Design Approach

Your pages will be generated using clean html/css code. We do not use WYSIWYG html editors or page templates, although if you find a design you like we can create something similar.

Code Validation

We validate coded pages using the official W3C html markup validation service (see the Home page). This means that browsers won't have to guess what's intended (debug it) whilst downloading. So validated pages should load faster and display better! We validate both the XHTML code and the cascaded style sheet (CSS).

Data/Content Management System (CMS)

You have the option of having a custom-built CMS. This could allow you to manage clients, add or delete products, change product descriptions, change prices, upload site images, monitor sales, arrange product delivery etc. CMS access is usually via an encrypted password.

Type of Server (Host)

Basic sites or small business sites usually use a shared host. This means the host shares computing facilities with other websites and costs are minimised. But if the site requires the transfer of large amounts of data, or there are site access bottlenecks then it will probably be necessary to use a virtual private server (VPS), or even a dedicated server. This requires server administration (not to be confused with Website Administration).

Search Engine Optimization (SEO)

We optimize the content and code of your primary pages in order to increase their ranking with search engines. Given your key search phrases, we can usually put you on the first or second pages of Google. Your new site will be submitted to Google, Yahoo, Ask, Bing and Moreover.

Security

Any pages involving the transmission of sensitive information will use secure socket layer (SSL) technology (the browser shows https rather http). Data is encrypted before it is sent in either direction. We will purchase an SSL certificate for the site and display it's logo to inform customers.

Secure Customised Checkout

Checkout can summarise purchases and ask for personal information before directing the customer to secure payment e.g. PayPal or WorldPay. Using server-side processing we feedback customer payment progress to the CMS (and possibly to a third-party client) and to the customer. Packing notes can be printed upon payment confirmation.

Server Side Processing

Many websites (not only online shops) require customer/client input to be processed at the server. This can vary from simple form processing to complex data manipulation such as image processing. We use the latest versions of the popular PHP scripting language (PHP 5.2.9 or later) to write the code.

Multiple Databases

The PHP scripts store information in the form of tables on large password-accessed MySQL5 databases. Sometimes just one database will do, and simple static sites don't need one at all!

Hit Statistics

Your site can have a hidden statistics package and you can monitor your site performance at any time. A typical display for a small home business is shown below.
